First Sherbrooke edition of Zone 01

On March 31st, La Montée Le Ber school hosted the first Sherbrooke edition of the Zone 01 competition, an international challenge of educational robotics.

What is Zone 01?

It is a friendly competition that allows elementary and secondary school students to exercise their creativity while familiarizing themselves with robotic programming. The aim is to design and program robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT systems in order to meet various technical challenges.

For this first edition in our region, 5 schools of the Eastern Townships were participating and the atmosphere was electric! (Not to say robotic…!)

Elementary school students, in addition to building and programming their robots for the challenges, had also prepared team presentations about the challenges of the growing population in urban areas. Their vision of public transports, energy and the world of the future is full of creativity!

On the side of high school students, the challenges are naturally a little higher! An autonomous robot that must cross a valley by self-constructing a bridge, or a handling vehicle that has to make actions and course decisions depending on the type of packages that it finds on the game board… not straight forward !!

Congratulations to the Zone 01 program for the impact it has in the lives of many young people by offering them great opportunities to explore an important growing technical field while having fun!

CFM was present as a sponsor to encourage teams and support the initiative.

I even had the privilege and pleasure of acting as a judge for some exciting hockeybot games where the youngsters in the heat of the action squirmed sometimes as if it was going to help their robot to navigate better!

If Sherbrooke’s competition is over, the 2017 Zone 01 tour continues in the other participating cities in Quebec. Good luck to all young participants!!

CFM also wants to encourage other schools in the Eastern Townships region to get involved in the event for the 2018 season!
